چکیده

THOMSEN, KLAUS, AND MOGENS SCHOU. Renal lithium excretion k man. Am. J. Physiol. 215(4): 823-827. 1968.--Renal clearances of creatinine, lithium, sodium, and potassium were determined in six healthy human subjects. Lithium excretion was not significantly affected by water diuresis or the administration of furosemide, bendroflumethiazide, ethacrynic acid, ammonium chloride, spironolactone, or potassium chloride. Sodium-poor diet led to decrease and extra dietary sodium chloride to increase of lithium excretion; the changes took place relatively slowly. Osmotic diuresis (urea) and the administration of sodium bicarbonate, acetazolamide, and aminophylline all produced significant increase of lithium excretion. Lithium ions seem to be reabsorbed mainly in the proximal tubules. The observations may form the basis of a procedure for active treatment of lithium poisoning.

Renal handling of lithium and the effects of mannitol and arginine vasopressin in man.

1. A study has been undertaken in six healthy male subjects to clarify whether post-proximal segments of the nephron contribute to the renal handling of lithium under conditions of maximal forced osmotic load diuresis and arginine vasopressin-induced antidiuresis. Increments in the fractional clearance of free water, as a measure of effect at the proximal tubule, were positively correlated with...

Effects of chronic lithium administration on renal acid excretion in humans and rats

Lithium therapy's most common side effects affecting the kidney are nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) and chronic kidney disease. Lithium may also induce a distal renal tubular acidosis. This study investigated the effect of chronic lithium exposure on renal acid-base homeostasis, with emphasis on ammonia and citrate excretion. We compared 11 individuals on long-term lithium therapy with six...

Determinants of the renal clearance of exogenous lithium in a large sample of a white male working population.

1. The associations between the renal clearance of ingested lithium (used as a marker of renal proximal tubular sodium handling) and a number of biological variables have been investigated in an unselected sample of 592 healthy and untreated white men (aged 21-68 years) under their usual living conditions and drawn from a population at work. 2. Renal excretion of lithium was expressed both as c...

Lithium treatment reduces the renal kallikrein excretion rate.

Lithium salts are widely used agents for the prophylactic treatment of affective disorders. Lithium salts may be associated with distal nephron dysfunction. Kallikrein is a protease which is generated by the distal nephron. We used an amidolytic assay of chromatographically purified enzyme to determine the urinary excretion rate of active kallikrein in relation to lithium treatment. All plasma ...
